About the event
Undo Bias Co-Founder, Zenique Gardner Perry, brings to The Luminary this fall, RWAR: Reading and Writing Against Racism. This twelve-week series centers works written by BIPOC authors and their experiences in the context of the United States and its racialized history. Zenique, a recent MFA graduate of Washington University, will be the primary facilitator of RWAR, bringing to this series an iteration of the curriculum she implemented as a second-year teaching fellow of WashU’s Creative Nonfiction Program. RWAR, an accompaniment of The Luminary’s upcoming fall exhibition, will consist of assigned weekly readings and individual writing prompts. Group exercises that are often utilized in their racial equity workshops will occasionally be co-facilitated and/or led by Undo Bias Partner, James Meinert.
This series is both reading and writing intensive. Additionally, participants should have an intermediate level of understanding about racial equity and justice with an interest in learning more. Because building safety and trust is essential to engaging in antiracism work, participants will be asked to commit to the entirety of the workshop series. If a participant must miss a session, we ask that they plan to attend the first three sessions and to have no more than two absences over the course of the series. Sessions will take place September 3, 10, 17, 24, October 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19, December 3, and 10
COVID guidelines permitting, each workshop will run for two hours on Saturday mornings in an allocated space at The Luminary. The series may accommodate up to twenty participants and will utilize a sliding-scale, fee-based schedule, offering each class at a range of $20-50, to be paid in full at the time of registration for the series. Registrations paid at the higher end of the fee schedule contribute to the partial and full scholarships we will offer for this series.
